I'm currently working on a masters in photojournalism out of Washington, D.C., and I also happen to have a massive passion for everything motorsports. Given that it just doesn't make sense financially to buy a race car, I make it my mission to put myself trackside wherever and whenever possible, and to ultimately make a living doing it. So after moving to D.C. late last month, I needed to sink my teeth into the local motorsports scene and start looking for potential semester projects and story ideas. Conveniently the next event just happened to be rallycross at Summit Point, West Virginia. I'm originally from Houston, where I've competed in Solo since I got my license, but we don't have much of a rallycross group out there (although they have since become more active, thanks Cam), and this was my first time to such an event. And it did not disappoint.
Bask in the sideways, muddy, and oft-boxer-engined magnificence.

Number 126 looks like it has the rental car barcode on it.

Is that really a box-stock, brand new Accent out there?
I gotta know more about this. What are the classes? How long is the course? Anything.

Summit Point? I was there yesterday for the Karting on the main circuit. I was curious to see what was going on behind the treeline. I laughed a lot when I saw the Hyundai hustling around the course.

For rallycross action here in TX there is Texas Rallysport, it's been around for 3 years now I think, and was started by James Wilson (you may be familiar with him from the Houston SCCA solo events).

Some really nice shots, especially Nos. 3 and 4. Nice job.

rallycross is much simpler than solo. There are only 9 classes. Combinations of Stock, Prepared, and Modified and drive train FWD, RWD, or AWD.
![]() 09/09/2013 at 12:05 |
|
It is! It was their first time out to an event.
The course wound up being about a minute long, and the classes are structured similarly to solo rules in that they're designed around modified/stock and tire specs.

Yeap! I really wanted to get around for to see more of what was going on around the track (I think there was a bmwcca autocross going on as well), but I was so absorbed in the rally cross.

Oh cool the 44 318! I read his build thread. He lives around here.
If you just moved to DC make sure to check out Cars and Coffee Great Falls every saturday morning at 7am. It is worth it. Always around 200 cars show up.

I'd take my rental to a rally.

SCCA ruling says you can't have any form of the number "1" on your car unless you are a current leader in said group.
I see an offender...

Decent pix. But you need to get closer, either physically, or with longer lenses, IMO.

First time I did a RallyX, I didn't have a car to run it,so I just rented one. It was a base Ford Escort sedan, and I didn't go out there to win the championship, I went out to have lots of fun. Mission accomplished.

Would I tear apart the underbody of an E91 328i with sport package (lower ride height) at rallycross? I'm pretty sure I don't really care, but it's still worth asking... :)
![]() 09/09/2013 at 16:44 |

So no Mitsubishi Lancer Evolutions? Well the lone Mazda RX-3 kind of almost makes up for it. Good photos Baron.
![]() 09/09/2013 at 17:05 |

There was a Lancer (not an evo) in the paddock area, but it wasn't competing.

That's me :) Happy you had a good time, I'm always open to taking riders! Glad you didn't post one of the pics I'm sure you have of me making stupid faces after an error on that run!

Oh I know that for sure, lol. I'm very visually reactive to driving mistakes. Good thing film can't capture curse words, hah...

Though on my final run, when I was too far out to catch the class leader and way ahead of the car placing behind me, I did the whole run puffing on a cig. That would have made an interesting "race" shot!~

RX-3? We have a couple RX-7s, but no RX-3's running. I would love to see one though!
![]() 09/09/2013 at 18:11 |

Sorry, I meant RX-7. its the old school 1993 version if I'm not mistaken.

I have been doing SCCA RallyCross for years and it's a ton of fun! It was also my "launch pad" into other motorsports. Great place to start!

Nice pix... but working on a photojournalism degree, don't you think you should be getting your REAL NAME attached to this work, rather than a "handle?"
![]() 09/09/2013 at 23:31 |
|
They're attached to my name in other formats. When I made this account I wasn't sure about my career path yet, and this is the first time I've posted any of my work here. I wasn't sure if they'd even see the main site, to be honest. But after their success (thanks for the love everyone, it means a lot), I may have to change my username. Can you do that? I haven't checked yet.
And it appears you can. Thanks for that!

I was surprised too, but he was driving the wheels off it though. They have a rollover rule, but I guess it passed tech somehow.

yes, it was actually a rental car. Classes are RWD, FWD, or AWD with 3 levels of modifications in each class ("stock", prepared, modified). All the rules are at SCCA.com under "rallycross." Here's a primer we wrote for the local program before this season:
